The Ogun State Government has revealed why it is yet to inaugurate the Ogun State Security Network, otherwise known as the Amotekun Corps, since March.
Ogun State has kept sealed lips since March when the House of Assembly passed the Amotekun Corps bill into a law.
Not satisfied with the situation, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had berated the Governor Dapo Abiodun government for the delay in inaugurating the Amotekun Corps in spite of the “rising security challenges” in the State.
Speaking on an Abeokuta radio station on Monday evening, the Special Adviser to Gov Abiodun on Public Communications, Remmy Hazzan, said the State government had not decided on who should be the Commander of the Corps.
According to Remmy Hazzan, the State government has not been able to appoint a Commander for Amotekun since March when the bill was passed by the lawmakers, saying that was the only reason the security outfit had not come into operation.
He, however, said the State was working towards appointing the Commander in no distant time so as to inaugurate the local security agency.
Speaking on funding, Hazzan disclosed that the State government had accommodated into its 2020 amended appropriation act, some major things needed to kick-start Amotekun in Ogun.
“The issue of who should be the Commander is what is still delaying us. We are yet to appoint a Commander. But we are already working on that within. As soon as that is concluded, we will announce the name and Amotekun will be inaugurated immediately.
“In our amended 2020 appropriation act, what the corps needs for its take off has been included. Amotekun will be inaugurated soon,” Hazzan stated.
