LaLiga Match Report: Benzema’s brace, Vinicius’ goal suffer Real Mallorca

Real Madrid beat Real Mallorca 3-0 in La Liga (LL), adding to their 6-1 victory in the reverse earlier this season, Naija News 247 gathered.

The game got off to a blistering start as Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy went close within six minutes. Mallorca had their first opportunity five minutes later, but Vedat Muriqi couldn’t sort his feet out and directed Brian Oliván’s pinpoint cross wide.

The hosts were growing in confidence and the 35th minute, a brilliantly intricate move looked like it had come to an end when Nacho Fernández made a fantastic last-ditch challenge on Ángel. Instead, Pablo Maffeo nipped in to steal the ball, only to see his final attempt trickle wide off the post.

At the other end, Maffeo had been frustrating Vinícius Júnior and did so again shortly before the break by sliding in to block the Brazilian’s shot. When the winger finally lost his marker and teed up David Alaba, the opposite full-back Oliván blocked the Austrian’s strike.

The teams had looked even as the second half started, but the visitors went ahead before the hour mark. Iddrisu Baba cheaply conceded possession under pressure from Federico Valverde, allowing Benzema to offer Vinícius his 14th LaLiga goal of the season on a plate.

Trying to atone for his error, Baba had a shot from the edge of the box saved midway through the half. Real Madrid had a penalty in the 75th minute when Vinícius and Benzema linked up for another swift move forward.

The former was shoved over by Oliván, resulting in a spot-kick the latter confidently converted. Benzema then headed home Marcelo’s cross for a remarkable eighth goal in his last five matches.

There was concern moments later as the Frenchman went off injured, but ‘Los Blancos’ continued the momentum from their dramatic UEFA Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain, recording their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions.

While Real Madrid is 10 points clear atop the LaLiga table, ‘Los Piratas’ remain two points above the relegation zone, having lost five matches in a row.
