The top Yoruba monarch, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has died.
Connectley Naija News gathered that Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti in the late hours of Friday.
According to Premium Times Nigerian Newspaper, the remains of the top Yoruba traditional ruler were taken to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday, and traditional rites commenced.
He was 83 years old and had ruled for 52 years, making him the longest reigning Alaafin in history.
After receiving the word of the monarch’s dying from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi,’ who would now oversee Oyo until a new Alaafin is installed, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is anticipated to make an official announcement.
The monarch had been ill, and a plan had been put in place to fly him out of the country before he died late Friday night.
According to a source acquainted with the medical travel plan, his ticket and a few wives’ own had already been purchased.
His death happened after the deaths of two other senior Oyo State monarchs, Saliu Adetunji, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and Jimoh Oyewumi, the Soun of Ogbomoso. All of this took place in less than five months.
Although a new Olubadan has been placed, the Soun remains unoccupied.
With the death of Alaafin Adeyemi, the Agunloye Ruling House now has the task of producing the next Oyo monarch. Bello Ladigbolu, Mr Adeyemi’s predecessor, was from the Agunloye House.
