Chelsea continue their summer transfer window by getting their hands on Édouard Mendy. The Blues have put more than € 25 million on the table to afford the Senegalese international goalkeeper from Stade Rennais.
Two years after signing Kepa Arrizabalaga (25) with a transfer fees worth € 80m, Chelsea have decided to hand over the checkbook to recruit another goalkeeper.
Frank Lampard, far from being satisfied with the performance of his Spanish goalkeeper last season, asked for reinforcement and won his case. Roman Abramovich and his management offered him Édouard Mendy (28).
The Senegalese international (7 capes), who has 63 appearances in Ligue 1 over the past two seasons, has signed a five-year contract with the Blues and is changing financially.
Stade Rennais, where he played happily since the summer of 2019, will receive an amount greater than € 25 million for the transfer of his Number 1 as Chelsea have finalized the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, from Rennes.
The Senegalese international has signed a 5-year contract and will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for a place in the goal.
Another significant investment by the Blues
This operation completes a massive transfer window for Chelsea. With the arrivals of Édouard Mendy, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and, to a lesser extent, Malang Sarr and Xavier Mbuyamba, Chelsea spent nearly 300 M € on the transfer market in the midst of the crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.
With such investments, Frank Lampard is now under pressure. The former club legend will have to do better than 4th place in the Premier League and last season’s Champions League quarter-final. It’s up to him to play.
